{ fly away } August 20, 2009

That day, I was looking at the birds at Bishan Park during the bazaar, while ogling at the dogs that were passing by, totally distracted by the birds, children and people all round, and probably shouting in their minds ‘BIRD!’. (Those who have watched the animation ‘Up!’ would know what I mean.)

In fact, I’m not much of a bird person. The ones that plaque the trees along Orchard Road really frighten me with their excited chirps in the evening. Probably I feel that their droppings might befall on my head anytime. But, I do think our little feathered friends have interesting shapes and such adorable body lines that really inspired this range of handmade necklaces and earrings. Some of those canaries, doves, and egrets that I’ve seen in bird parks, aviaries, nature reserves and as pets, are so endearing with their round eyes and bright songs.

Sometimes, I thought how wonderful it would be to take flight. Flying away to someplace beautiful, whenever your heart calls for it, or just hovering in the skies, taking in the view below among fluffy clouds, would be simply wonderful. If only I have wings…

{ golden ears } July 24, 2009

These earrings, in varied hues of gold, embody different styles, and for different skin color. If you have fairer skin, go for the bright gold and bring the glow out from your skin. If you have a slight tan, go for the dark gold earrings and look instantly city-chic. If you have a deep tan, both colors work so well. I love the way bright gold exhibits one’s boldness that throws all inhibitions away with that hell-may-care attitude. Dark gold or antiqued gold has that romantic feel of bygone days or that snazzy feel of our fast-paced cities.

{ greek goddess } June 10, 2009

Even when it’s summer (translation: scorching), the parties cannot stop. Meeting up with loved ones, friends or business associates seem to be also turning up the heat right in the middle of the season. And this season, we see dresses that are inspired by Greek goddesses. Think Lena Headey in the movie ‘300’. Think silk satin and chiffon. Think romantic, structured flair and creamy colors. You are on your way…

Whether it’s the draped dress for summer cocktails, the bustier gown or the one-shoulder dress for evening events, or the bandeau dress for a day reception, be sure to lend the appeal of these Athens-inspired accessories to navigate the social whirl. Strike a Grecian pose!

{ gold rush } May 27, 2009

Summer days are here! In full force than ever before. The weather didn’t used to be so bad. This heat is a poignant reminder that the Earth is really burning up.

Summer days = shimmery days. Why? I recall my childhood days when June meant school holidays and everything seemed to be cast in sun-glow – the swimming pools, the days out at the zoo, the sun coming out from the canopy of leaves above, and playing with sand at playgrounds. And as a child, I envied my aunts wearing those beautiful gold earrings that give such sparkle to these days. Now, you can give summer staples an instant hit of glam with these earrings. Wear it with everything from an elegant LBD to downtown denim. Just hook and go!

{ keyed up about the medieval times } May 19, 2009

Castles always held an attraction for me. Those locked doors, hidden corridors that magically led from 1 room to another. Chambers that throbbed with stories of their own. I’ve always wanted to visit a castle to explore its narrow stairwells and broad courtyards, listening to whispers of its past life.

I was looking forward to Castle Sant’Angelo, which is right outside the Vatican City, across the Tiber from Rome. Sadly, the doors were closed on that fateful day when I arrived due to an annual meeting. Yes, castles have annual meetings. And yes, this is the one featured in the movie, ‘Angels & Demons’ (which all the more spurred this entry after watching the movie over the weekend).

All I managed to snap pictures of, was the beautiful bridge that leads to this medieval castle and fortress. The other picture has one of my favorite stone angels in the foreground (there were many lining the whole stretch of the bridge! So I had to choose one.). Sharing these inspirations…

To unlock those heavy doors are similarly ornate keys. These key necklaces mimic those from the medieval times, when ironwork was intricate and blacksmiths worked hard with their tools and wrought iron to cast castles with that flavor so rarely seen in present times. And of course, who can forget crowns right?

{ peace doves } April 16, 2009

Doves, lovely as they are with their soft feathers, are symbols of peace, love and freedom. In Christian art & poetry, Dove represents the Holy Spirit (John 1:32).

Similarly, they have inspired many artists, designers, composers and film-makers. Using them here in the bijou way of a piece of jewelry, and featuring these this month, I hope they hold special significance to the wearers – be it in the conservation of the dwindling dove species, or the hope for peace (war causes too much harm, both to people and to our ailing Earth). And of course, when we love each other and the Earth, we’ll be a little closer to inner peace.

Sharing some of my favorite quotes on peace and love:

“We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power.

Then will our world know the blessings of peace.”

~ William Ewart Gladstone

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

~ Mother Teresa

“Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.”

~ Seymour Miller & Jill Jackson, “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” 1955

“In the name of peace
They waged the wars
Ain’t they got no shame”

~Nikki Giovanni

{ raindrops keep fallin’ on my head } March 26, 2009

Another rainy day…recently, the weather is so erratic – a constant reminder of how our Earth is suffering on a daily basis. Next month’s posts are dedicated to our Earth in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22. I’ll share more in the next post. Remember Earth Hour. Do your part. Every small effort counts. Even if you think you are just 1 person.

Well, back. I keep on humming this song. I do like the lyrics.

B.J. Thomas – Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head lyrics

I love rainy days. Of course, when I’m not out and especially at night or in the wee hours of the morning. The smell is heavenly and the sound is so therapeutic when writing or creating pieces.

When I’m out, I’m one of those people who seldom carry an umbrella. I keep losing them! My excuse: my bag is very heavy already. And thus, these brolly-themed pieces allow my tongue-in-cheek reply whenever my friends question the whereabouts of my umbrella. “See! It’s here!”

Had a good bazaar at The Cathay the past weekend! Thank you to YOU and all of you who came down to help, support or rave about our setup and pieces. Hopefully, we get to do more of these in the year.

For those who didn’t make it, no worries! Join plings facebook group (see right) and get updated whenever we have fixed a date for going on the road again. Touch and feel our pieces then! (Though some of our one-of-a-kind pieces might be grabbed up before we hit the roads. For those, check here regularly or sign up for our enewsletter updates. See right too.)

Pardon my very short upload this week. Too tired. Hahaha…and I’m really itching to start sewing with my new sewing machine and the super-adorable and exclusive Japanese fabrics that I’ve gotten.

For now, enjoy these handcrafted earrings made with Czech glass beads, amethyst, turquoise, agate, freshwater seed pearls and tourmaline. This is the delicate side of pling (though one may not see it often!). That’s why, only these 2 pairs.
